How to Stop a Dog From Digging in the Flowerbed
By Tricia Goss
Overview
Your dog helps protect your home, is a playmate to your children and is your most faithful companion. If he digs up your prized tulips, though, he is likely to find himself in the doghouse - literally! Some dogs dig in an effort to hunt. Others dig to bury treasured toys or find shelter. No matter the reason for Fido's tunneling habit, there are steps you can take to discourage him from tearing up your treasured garden.
Step 1
Place a lawn sprinkler in the area where your dog typically digs. Sit near the hose nozzle and act like you are not paying attention. When the dog begins to dig, quickly turn on the sprinkler. After several wet experiences, he will likely associate digging with getting sprayed.
Step 2
Provide shelter for the dog, especially if he is frequently outdoors. Some dogs will dig to escape the heat or to find warmth. By making sure your pet has adequate heat and shade, you may eliminate the need to dig.
Step 3
Entertain your dog. Much like children, some dogs will act inappropriately when they are bored or desire attention. Make sure to play with your dog every day, and provide interesting toys so that he can entertain himself, as well.
Step 4
Place chicken wire on the ground in your flowerbed. Cover it with a bit of top soil so that it is not visible. When your dog digs there, the unpleasant sensation of scratching the wire will dissuade him from digging.
Step 5
Exercise with your dog. Some dogs dig due to nervous energy. By providing him with a couple long walks each day, you will give him a healthy outlet for this energy.
